The beaches of the Eastern Cape are among the most impressive anywhere, stretching from the Tsitsikamma National Park on South Africa's south coast across St Francis Bay and Algoa Bay and up the southeastern coast to Port Alfred – 800 kilometers of coastline, they are not called the Golden Miles for nothing!
Among the more renowned are those of St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth and at the Seekoei River mouth.
Jeffreys Bay is particularly well known for its large shelly beaches and surfing conditions which are among the best in the world.
Further north is Algoa Bay, a large bay of more than 40km of beach. Port Elizabeth is central to this stretch of coastline, and with excellent facilities, warm water, safe bathing and a mild, sunny climate, is a premier recreation and Watersports venue.
The Southern Beaches offer safe and sheltered swimming, body surfing, sunbathing, boardsailing, excellent waves and surfing opportunities as well as interesting inter-tidal sea life, while the Northern Beaches offer vast stretches of sand and dunes ideal for long beach walks and superb angling and swimming opportunities.
The Swartkops River Estuary is a unique Watersports playground - ideal for power boating, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and angling.
The beaches along the Wild Coast offer seclusion found nowhere else on South Africa's length of Indian Ocean coastline.
This coast is indeed wild, where the green shrubs of the inland vegetation burst to move across the shifting sands, and lagoons and river mouths are the place of many birds. Port Edward and Port St John are ideal bases from which to explore this coastline.
