Join a four hour walking tour that spans thousands of years in The Valley of the Ancient Voices. Discover the history of a place that has been used as a home, a refuge and a place of spiritual significance. 20 minutes from Grahamstown and a pleasant day-trip from Port Elizabeth.
This place is imbued with meaning, but we battle to decipher what is being said. The potency is palpable, but we are culturally blind to its content. In seeking to understand our origins, we come away from a place like this with a deep conviction of connectedness, and humility at the power of the human mind....
Rock art, relics and artefacts give clues to the myriad of animals and people that have crossed through this place – using it as a place of refuge, or a home, or of spiritual significance. Follow the same paths that they did, paths as ancient as the rocky outcrops into which they have been worn.
A knowledgeable guide will lead you through the Valley of the Ancient Voices. The walk winds through the valley for 2 kilometers from beginning to end at a moderate pace. There are numerous stops to appreciate the rock-art and wildlife. The towering cliffs are home to innumerable types of birds, reptiles and mammals – a nature-lovers paradise.
Picnic packs and refreshments are provided to visitors in backpacks and are enjoyed at the rock pool, which is a deep rip in the earth exposing the underground water table. The bottom of this pool has never been fathomed and its permanence has always been an attraction to humans and animals. The cool water makes for a refreshing swim during the tour.
