Dolphin Watching

Dolphin Watching
With the warm Mozambique current flowing past the KZN coast, it’s not surprising to see Dolphins in and around the beaches. Considered to be a good luck omen to sailors, a boat trip off shore has resulted in spectacular sights of dolphins ducking and diving through the waves. As one of the pictures shows, they love to surf as well!

There are three types of dolphins that can be seen along the coast. They are the Common dolphin, the Humpback and the Bottlenose variety. The latter is the smallest, averaging 140kg or 22 stone.

The Common dolphin have been known to swim in shoals of up to 5,000 and they create a spectacular sight during the famed ‘Sardine run’ when they drive millions of sardines into the shallow water.

There are numerous boat companies that offer trips from one hour to full day and is definitely worth doing.
